Historical Aztec artifacts

What comes to your mind when somebody talks about Aztec? To me, Aztec is a world full of colors and beautiful patterns. But in reality, it is more than just colors and patterns. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, “Aztec, Nahuatl-speaking people who in the 15th and early 16th centuries ruled a large empire in what is now central and southern Mexico. The Aztec are so called from Aztlán (“White Land”), an allusion to their origins, probably in northern Mexico.”

Wikipedia suggests that from 13th to 16th century Aztec Civilization  bloomed in central Mexico. Aztec patterns are mostly geometrical, with lot of detail and use of triangle and sphere. DesiCrafts brings to you a collection of Aztec pattern ribbons, laces and fabrics, so browse on…

How to differentiate the real vintage Indian silk clothing from the fake ones!

Hello Crafters and Vintage lovers,

Now this post could be of great importance of you if you are vintage silk lover won’t hesitate to spend a few $ more just because you think what you are buying is Vintage.

We are from India and we know how few seller could really fake the vintage silk clothing. So, long tips cut short, here are few steps to make sure what you are buying is real vintage silk:

1. How to find out that a fabric / cloth piece is made of real silk : cut a small piece of fabric you want to test and burn it. If it smells similar as human hair smells after burning, it is real silk. It might melt like plastic if it has artificial Zari and Polyester silk yarn content in it.

2. Why some Indian zari work in vintage silk clothing becomes dull and dark and faded: zari in vintage clothing used to fade and darken because real silver was used to make the zari thread. Now a days, it won’t fade or darken because artisans don’t use silver zari anymore mainly due to two reasons-

a). Higher costs of making the fabric

b). Need to polish it every time you want to wear it.

3. How to test if the Banaras Sari that you have bought is pure silk with real silver zari: very easy. During the burn test, if the zari melts like plastic, it is no way pure silver zari. The clothing with real silver zari willl leave the silver traces in the ashes once the fabric is burnt.

4. The darkness test: another way to test the zari work of vintage clothing and Banaras sari fabric is to see the condition of the zari. If the zari is darkened and faded in some areas, it could be real silver (that means the fabric or clothing is vintage) Silver is a metal that reacts with the air present in the atmosphere and changes its color if left open for some time (like a day or two). After polishing, it comes back to it’s original shiny silver color.

Hope these tips will help you next time when you shop vintage clothing and sari fabrics!

DIY wedding brooches and hair clips

As told in our last post, we have been working on a project for a client who is getting married next month. We got the pin backs for brooches from CraftsUtopia on Etsy and have made these brooches. We are sharing the DIY with our readers here. So here we go:

Step1.

Materials required:

1. Shimmer net fabric (available at our store)

2. Sew on applique of  different shapes (available at our store)

3. Pin backs

4. Matching silk threads (available at our store)

5. Needle and Hot glue gun

6. Felt pieces of matching colors (we took blue and shocking pink, as suggested by our client)

Step2.

Cut the shimmery net fabric into 6×3 inches pieces. If you want to make the brooch bigger, you will have to cut the fabric in bigger proportion.

Cut shimmer net fabric into 5x3 inches pieces

Step3.

Now cut the felt into small round shape which makes the backing for the pin back. See the picture. We sew the pin back onto round shape felt piece to make it last longer. You can directly stick it on the felt using hot glue gun.

Prepare backing for pinback before making brooches

Step4.

Take the shimmer fabric strips and start making thin fan-folds (as we used to make when we were kids. The only difference is then we used paper and now it is fabric) and make a few tucks in the mid of each fan so that it doesn’t come back to previous position. This is your backing to put behind sew on applique.

Plug-in the glue gun and switch it on to let the glue melt and get ready for the next step, while you prepare the backing for the applique.

Final step

Step5.

Now apply some glue on the reverse side (felt surface) of the pin back and stick it well on the reverse side of the shimmer net fabric shape.

Step6.

On front or right surface of the shimmer net fabric shape, apply your preferred sew on applique shape with the help of hot glue gun. Press it with thumb and fingers and let it set well. Now trim the rough edges of the shape with sharp edged scissors.

Your own wedding brooches are ready. To make them look really pro, you can tuck them on cards with beautiful tags etc. and put them in a a decorative tray on the D day.
